Dogs all have something called “opposition reflex.” That’s a fancy way of saying, when you pull or push one way, the dog can’t help but pull the other! It’s how they’re wired.
Go ahead, try it. Gently push on your dog’s shoulder… you’ll feel him pushing back. Push a bit harder and he matches with resistance.
The problem is, over time, the resistance grows greater and greater. Your dog learns that this reflex is an acceptable thing, and now you’re in a power struggle with your dog.
At Super Dog School we never let puppies or adult dogs believe this is OK. Even if it’s been going on for a long time, our training methods redirect this energy and get the dog’s focus on you, so you’re walking together comfortably. No more pulling matches!
